It aims to further stimulate the curiosity and enthusiasm for free exploration of the majority of scientific and technological workers, lead the trend of scientific and technological innovation and the direction of scientific research, and serve the development of national scientific and technological innovation. “How to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in asymptomatic stage early?” proposed by Professor Jianping Jia, director of the Innovation Center of Neurological Disease from Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, was rated as the top ten frontier scientific issues of the China Association for Science and Technology in 2022. It can be seen that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has become one of the hottest issues in the current society, and it is also a major social problem that needs to be solved urgently.

There are currently 15 million dementia patients and 38.7 million mild cognitive impairment patients in China, and the number is still growing. The annual cost of dementia is as high as more than 1 trillion yuan, causing a heavy burden to the society. It is imperative to establish an effective dementia diagnosis and treatment system in China. The pathophysiological changes of AD begin to appear in the brain 15 to 20 years before the onset of AD symptoms, but clinical symptoms may not appear at this time, which is called the asymptomatic period of AD. Identifying and intervening in this period through peripheral markers and other objective diagnostic techniques may be the most fundamental way to reverse AD.
Professor Jia has been engaged in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease for many years, actively created AD early identification and prediction methods. His team developed 6 diagnostic technologies that can predict AD 5 to 7 years in advance, making AD pre-disease treatment and pre-disease prevention become achievable. Recently, the Alzheimer’s disease body fluid detector developed by Jia Jianping’s team won a national patent. It is the world’s first instrument that combines ultrasound and real-time fluorescence detection, and established a method for detecting Aβ proteins in peripheral blood.This enables the diagnosis of AD using a drop of blood.This detection method has improved the level of AD diagnosis in my country, and has a wide range of application prospects, and has taken an important step in the diagnosis of AD in the asymptomatic period.
Professor Jia called on experts, patients and the society to work together to overcome the major scientific and social problem of AD diagnosis in the asymptomatic period as soon as possible, realize the early prevention and treatment of AD, reduce the prevalence rate, and improve the heavy economic burden of AD on social development and individuals, contribute to the construction of a healthy China.
